Plectranthus ernstii, often called the Bonsai Mint is a small, semi-succulent plant that is Native to South Africa. This is a popular choice for plant enthusiasts due to its compact, ornamental structure.
The leaves are small, rounded, and minty-green with a slight sheen and serrated edges. They grow in pairs along the thin stems and have a soft, velvety texture. When lightly brushed or pinched, the leaves release a subtle, pleasant aroma. You may observe small, tubular, light purple or white flowers bloom in clusters along the stems, typically in late summer or early fall.
One of the plant’s most distinguishing features is its caudex, a thickened, woody base that stores water. With its sculptural appearance (caudex and woody branches), and slow growth, this plant is suitable for bonsai art. Trim back leggy stems to encourage fuller growth and a more compact, bonsai-like appearance. This will also encourage branching.
CARE:
- Does best with bright, indirect light and can benefit from some direct morning sunlight. Insufficient light may cause leggy growth, so place it in a well-lit spot.
- Sensitive to the cold, so keep away from drafty windows.
- Due to its caudex, this plant is drought-tolerant. Water when the top 1/2 of the soil is dry, reducing the frequency in winter. Avoid allowing the soil to completely dry out.
- Avoid keeping the soil consistently wet, which can lead to root rot; it's better to underwater slightly than to keep it too wet.
