The Easter Cactus is a beautiful, epiphytic cactus known for its arching, segmented stems and vibrant coloured flowers that bloom in spring, around Easter—hence its name!
- It does well in an area that receives consistent bright indirect light, and a few hours of direct morning or late afternoon sun.
- Water when the first 70-80 percent of the soil becomes dry. Avoid allowing the soil to completely dry out.
- Appreciates moderate humidity, but is adaptable to household humidity.
TIPS TO ENCOURAGE FLOWERS:
Provide a cool rest period during late fall/early winter (October–December). During this time, keep your Easter Cactus in a cooler room (10–16°C) for at least 6–8 weeks. Reduce watering during this time, but do not allow the soil to completely dry out.
The plant requires shorter daylight hours (late fall/winter) to set buds. Provide 12–14 hours of darkness daily for about 6 weeks before expected blooming. You can place it in a dark room or cover it with a box.
After the rest period, gradually increase watering and move the plant to a location that receives bright, indirect light.
Try to maintain a consistent moderate level of humidity (about 50 percent) and warm temperatures (18–24°C) while it’s budding and blooming as this will help to prevent buds dropping off. Avoid moving it too much—once buds form, sudden changes in light, temperature, or watering can cause bud drop.
