The Monkey Tail Cactus features trailing stems covered in soft, white, hair-like spines that give it a fuzzy, “tail-like” appearance.
The stems can grow several feet long, cascading beautifully over the edges of its pot. The density of the “hair” is often influenced by consistent warmth and strong light. These conditions typically encourage fuller, fluffier growth. In its natural habitat, this hair acts as a protective layer, helping shield the plant from intense sun and preventing the stems from burning.
You may observe tubular flowers in vibrant shades of pink, adding an unexpected burst of colour against the soft, trailing stems.
CARE:
- Requires ample light. Thrives with consistent bright light to full sun. A sunny window (south or west-facing) is ideal. More light typically encourages healthy growth, denser “hair,” and increases the chance of flowering.
- Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then give it a thorough drink.
- Avoid overwatering and ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogged soil, which can quickly lead to root rot.
- During the winter months, reduce the watering frequency to mimic its dormant period.
- A period of dormancy is recommended during the winter months to encourage blooming. During this time, you can keep the cactus in a cooler location with reduced light to simulate its natural winter conditions.
- Avoid using heavy potting soils or soils that retain too much moisture when repotting. Opt for a gritty well-draining potting mix.
