The Ficus petiolaris is a truly remarkable plant that is admired for its sculptural swollen caudex and beautiful heart-shaped leaves adorned with striking red veins. Native to the rocky regions of Mexico, this unique species becomes even more captivating with age. While the caudex may be relatively modest on younger plants, it continues to expand and become increasingly pronounced over the years, eventually developing into a thick, bonsai-like base. 

CARE: 

• Does best with bright indirect light and can tolerate several hours of gentle morning or late afternoon sun. Avoid prolonged harsh midday sun indoors.
• Allow the top 1/3-1/2 of the soil to dry before watering thoroughly. During the winter months, reduce watering as growth slows. The caudex acts as a natural water reservoir, making this plant sensitive to overwatering. As the caudex enlarges, it stores progressively more water, so mature plants are generally more drought tolerant than young specimens.
• Moderate humidity is appreciate and will encourage healthier foliage and more vigorous growth. However, it is adaptable to household humidity.
